You will find hundreds of mail order nurseries on the Internet. Only a few though, might offer higher quality perennials at prices lower than ours. We are for sure one of the smaller mail order nurseries.....but our satisfied customers keep coming back! Along with striving to produce high quality perennials at competitive prices, we also try hard to offer plants that are garden worthy but often difficult to find at other nurseries.
We are a small, family operated  nursery located in central Pennsylvania. Having a poor location for retail sales, we used to market most of our plants at local farmers' markets, craft shows, and flea markets. In spring of 2000 we joined rank with other cyberspace mail order nurseries in launching our own web site. Here at ButterflyBushes.com we offer to the gardener a nice selection of butterfly attracting plants (both nectar plants and host plants), hummingbird attracting plants, hard-to-find perennials, and butterfly bushes, For the past six years or so, Monarch eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and adults have been available here too. We ship from May through October and guarantee satisfaction of every order shipped.

This Internet-based nursery will soon be for sale. My husband, Andy Smith, is now in his early seventies and I'm a bit beyond my mid sixties. Both of us have health issues and neither of us have the strength or stamina we had just 10 or 15 years ago. We have decided to ease into retirement by offering this portion of the business, ButterflyBushes.com, for sale and cutting back production to just that of Monarchs and milkweed plants. We'll be offering Monarchs and milkweed on a newly created web site, Monarchs-And-Milkweed.com, which is up and running now.
I don't know yet what the asking price will be for this business (leftover inventory and a web site with a well established customer base), and won't know until I contact an attorney for suggestion, but my guess is that the selling price will be at least $20,000. There will be no land  included in this transaction as we plan to retire right here, in this house that Andy built, where we will forever have our many established gardens to work in.
If you are a nurseryman who has an interest in growing and selling hummingbird and butterfly attracting plants, you'd like to have a busy Internet store front, and you are willing and able to pay the price, please email me so I can add your name to the list of people whom we should contact next fall (2019) when we will be serious in our search for a buyer.
During 2018 and 2019, I will work on building a customer base at Monarchs-And-Milkweed.com so that Andy and I will have something to do for a few more years before leaping into total retirement.
This web site, ButterlyBushes.com, has been my baby for almost 20 years and it will be hard to hand the reins over to someone else, but hand the reins over, I must. It's time to ease toward the transition to permanent retirement.

Our Plants:  Our plants are healthy, competitively priced, and ready for transplanting directly into the garden. Most of our perennials are shipped in 3-1/2" or 4" pots. We offer an on-line shopping cart, and for those people who do not wish to order via the online shopping cart,  we have included on our web site an order form which you may print, fill out, and then mail to us.
Our plant inventory changes periodically from May through October (the reason we do not distribute a printed catalog). What we offer in May will likely be different than what we offer in July, and what we offer in September will probably be different than what we offer in July.  For this reason, we suggest that you bookmark our site (add it to your 'favorites' if you are an AOL customer) and then check out our web pages numerous times during the growing season. Because you don't find here today the plants you are looking for doesn't mean that those plants won't be available for shipping in a few weeks.
Quantities are limited on much of our nursery stock. Plants will be reserved to fill orders in the sequence in which they are received. Please order at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment. Please do not order plants which are not currently posted on our web pages with a price. When plants are removed from our availability lists, they are temporarily or permanently out of stock.

Our Guarantee: We guarantee our plants to be true to name and in good condition when they are shipped to you. If you are not satisfied with the quality of our plants upon delivery to you, please notify us immediately (within 48 hours of delivery) and we will replace the plants or refund your money. If your plants are damaged in transit, contact the carrier at once for instructions on how to file a claim.

Local Orders: If you live in or near Centre County, PA, and would like to avoid shipping costs by picking up your order, please call or email to arrange a date and time for pickup.
