Clematis are easy to grow and generally live for many years. Most are winter hardy even in the most northern reaches of the U.S. The large flowering varieties we offer on this page are among the best available.
When to prune a Clematis depends upon when it blooms. All of the varieties we offer begin to bloom around June, and then sporadically bloom throughout the summer. These varieties should be pruned in early spring before new growth is produced, and pruning should be light (not cutting back to the ground). About 18" to 24" from the top of each branch, look for a plump, healthy bud. Make your cut just above that bud. Then move on to the next branch. Once you have cut back all the branches, remove damaged and/or crowded branches too.
